Learning Outcomes

The student is familiar with the most common fuels in Finland, their use and inportance for the Finnish energy supply. The student knows their production and main properties and is able to analyse the environmental effects from alternative fuels. The students is familiar with the basic combustion processes.

Total work load 81 h, of whoch scheduled studies 42 h and autonomous studies 39 h.

Contents

Main fuels used in finland, their production and properties in regard to combustion and the formation of emissions. The importance of the main fuels (oil, coal, black liquor, natural gas, wood chips, peat, waste) for the energy supply and national economy. Combustion reactions, related calculations and thermodynamics of combustion.

Antila, Karppinen, Leskelä, Mölsä, Pohjakallio: Tekniikan kemia, Edita 2008, chapters 7, 8, 12, and materials provided by the lecturer.

Grade 1: The student knows those subjects of the course, which are necessary for the forthcoming studies and working life.
Grade 3: The student is well-abled to utilize the course contents.
