Learning Outcomes

The student obtains basic knowledge of the operating principles of Smart Grids and of the essential devices and apparatuses in power distribution network and distributed energy production related to Smart Grids. The student understands the requirements of control and management systems related to the use of Smart Grids and has knowledge about the typical equipment and data transfer methods used in them.

Total work load 135 h containing scheduled studies and autonomous work.

Contents

Operating principle of a Smart Grid. Examples of functions and services offered by a smart Grid to a client. Most important components and principles in power distribution. Methods and electro-technical boundary conditions related to the network connection and use of distributed power production. Control, management and supervision systems for Smart Grid and their data transfer methods. Principles for determining the price of electricity and practices in electricity trade and related legislation.

Material or slides compiled by the teacher.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Theoretical contents in lectures. Knowledge is deepened in laboratory exercises where properties of certain devices are measured and studied in a Smart Grid /Micro Grid environment at the laboratory. In addition, the function of devices and apparatuses is introduced in their real operating environment during a field trip to a facility where Smart Grid is utilized.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5: The student is able to apply creatively the contents of the course.
Grade 3: The student is well-abled to utilize the course contents.
Grade 1: The student knows those subjects of the course, which are necessary for the forthcoming studies and working life.
