Learning Outcomes

The student regards safety as an important part of professional ethics. The student is aware of the significance of the occupational and industrial safety and knows the ways in which safety at the workplace is maintained and developed. The student completed the required exams for Finnish occupational safety and electrical work safety cards.
The student knows the safety regulations connected with electrical work and learns to take care of occupational safety in the laboratory, electrical work and when planning the electrical work and learns to act correctly in case of an electrical accident.

The student knows the main risks related to work in a chemical laboratory and learns how to avoid them.

Student's Workload

Total work load 81 h, of which scheduled studies 42 h.
The assessment of student’s own learning 1h is included in contact lessons.

Contents

The course consists of four parts: occupational safety (14h), electrical safety (12h), safety at chemical laboratory (12h) and first aid (4h). Completion of the course requires the passing of all four sections of the course.
Occupational safety at a common work place. Work-related illnesses and hazards, their assessment and elimination. General work instruction at work place and risk factors and their elimination, as well as preparing for accidents and first aid measures.

Standard SFS6002 Electrical Safety. Structure and grounding of an electrical network. Residual Current Devices. Effects of electricity on humans. Causes of electrocution and required actions in the case of one. Safety instructions at the Electrial Laboratory of Technobothnia.

Safe working methods at a chemical laboratory, protective equipment and basics of chemicals legislation. Premises, equipment and chemicals at the Environmental Laboratory of Technobothnia.

Completion of the course requires the passing of all four sections of the course.

Assessment Methods

Attendance on the lectures is required. The student has to get 75 % of correct answers in each individual exam: occupational safety, electrical safety and safety at chemical laboratory. The first aid section is passed by attendance.
